There are so many brands of crochet hook out there at the moment I thought I would do a quick guide to a few of my favourites.
Best Crochet Hooks – LOW BUDGET
If you are new to crochet there is certainly no need to break the bank and buy an expensive set of hooks. The best crochet hooks I used were a set of aluminium hand me down hooks that I used for years as they are still my go to set.
These are a great starter set, with an ergonomic grip ideal for people who hold their hooks like a pen. The set comes in a range of 8 sizes 2.5mm-6mm they are brightly coloured and great for kids to learn and practice crocheting.
FUSION – Set of 9 High Quality Aluminium Crochet Hooks Needles with Colourful Soft Rubber Grip Handles – in sizes 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, 5, 5.5, 6mm – comes with a handy organizer and a LIFETIME WARRANTY 🙂
With an extra hook and a hook case included this set is amazing value for money. Ideal for people who use the thumb hold rather than the pen hold. A great set for beginners through to advanced crocheters.
These sets are my favourite, they are the sets I sell and are used by me on a daily basis. Available in 22 sizes, in singles, in separate sets of the lace weight sizes, or 2mm-10mm. Inspire by my original hand me down set, I struggled to find a complete aluminium set that went up to a 10mm so I thought I would source my own. If like me you have never been a fan of the ergonomic grips then these are ideal for you.
For those of you who prefer wooden hooks or haven’t tried wooden hooks before these are the best starter set. Great if you crochet with a lot of cotton based yarn as it tends to not stick to the wood as much.
Best Crochet Hooks – MEDIUM BUDGET
These sets of hooks I would class as ones for the working crocheter, people who sell their makes and want a good reliable set giving the same quality time after time. This is also where you find the most well know brands in the crochet world.
Clover has been around for years in the world for crochet, they do two main sets of hooks, the Amour set and the slightly more expensive soft touch range. The soft touch has a special thumb grip and the Amour range is very similar to the low-budget set above.
Next is the fabulous Knit Pro waves and Symfonie set. The waves set comes in a sturdy zip case in a variety of colours. This is my personal favourite, it the one I use for all my commissions. With a super comfortable grip and a good length on the aluminium tip these are perfect or any project. Available in a sets of 9 or 14 up to 12mm.
The Symfonie set is Knit pro’s wooden set, made from birch wood and with a beautiful pattern, they come in a display box to keep them safe.
For the people who like the pen hold addi is a the perfect brand, sets start from 7 to 13 hooks in various sizes. In a handy travel case this is the perfect set for the travelling crocheter.
As you can probably tell I am not a fan of plastic crochet hooks as there are no other plastic hooks in this list, however this set is a life saver. I got this as a present from my long suffering other half, who has had to put up with me having the light on to crochet, whilst he is trying to watch a film or bed for years. This set comes with batteries in all the hooks and they last ages. Fantastic set for any late night crocheter!
Best Crochet Hooks – BUDGET NOT AN OPTION!
Time to treat yourself!
The Etimo Rose Tulip set has been around for a while as has always been the must have crochet set to have. In varying shades of pink this romantic set would be the perfect romantic gift.
If you crochet and you have never heard of the Furls odyssey set go check it out now! With the whole set, matching yarn bowl and stand costing over $900 dollars this is definitely more of an ornamental set than a working one, however I have had the pleasure of using a Furls hook as it is amazingly good. Their new red and gold set has just been released in time for valentines day. You can buy single hooks if you wanted to, but resisting the while set is very hard Good luck choosing your size!
Furls also have other ranges, their hand-made Heirloom wooden hooks and the Candy shop range if you want something a little different.
This is by no means exhaustive, there are loads of crochet hooks on the market. These are just a few of my favourites. I recommended always buying one hook before you splash out on a set to see if the shape and style suits you. Please let me know your thoughts on the selection above, if I have missed out any good sets please let me know in the comments below!
